This Is How You Lose the Time War
by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Description & Thoughts
I haven’t picked up a romance novel in a long time, but this book was the perfect one to rekindle your joy for romance. It takes the classic “enemies-to-lovers” trope and turns it into something entirely unique, with a slice of time travel.
The story follows two rival agents, Red and Blue, who belong to warring futures. They travel through time to unmake each other’s work, but along the way, they begin leaving letters. The letters are written in the rings of a tree, in the flavor of a sumac-scented tea, and in the entrails of dying civilizations - I just can’t get enough of it. What starts as a series of taunts between soldiers evolves into a correspondence of breathless, poetic yearning. I found myself savoring this book rather than just reading it.
